Calif. eyes statewide ban on plastic foam packaging

Nation's Restaurant News,  March 12, 2007

Sacramento, Calif. -- Hearings have been scheduled for April on legislation that would ban the use of plastic and polystyrene food containers by California's restaurants.

Los Angeles Assemblyman Mike Feuer, the bill's sponsor, reportedly contends that it would help protect beaches from pollution.

Plastic and polystyrene are said to make up about 90 percent of floating marine debris. Several coastal cities in the state, including San Francisco, have begun to phase in bans on such containers.
