MONKEY TRIALS & GORILLA SERMONS: Evolution and Christianity from Darwin to Intelligent Design. Peter J. Bowler. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2007.256 pp. Hardcover, $24.95. A scholar's survey of the history of the engagement of religious faith with scientific evolutionism. Bowler, professor of the history of science at Queen's University, Belfast, shows how whole ranges of alternative positions have been explored. They establish a continuous spectrum of opinion where, he says, creationism and extreme Darwinists want us to see only black and white alternatives. He calls for a critical historical approach to help understand--if not resolve--the tensions that still divide the modern world on this issue. Bowler says he hopes that by writing from a perspective shaped by residence outside North America, he can shed some light on the less confrontational aspects of the interaction.
