John Edward's 3.3-second disclaimer - Letter to the Editor

Skeptical Inquirer,  Nov-Dec, 2002

As a psychologist and college instructor of a course entitled "Critical Thinking About the Paranormal," I have heard much about John Edward's TV series Crossing Over on the Sci Fi channel. Recently I videotaped a couple of episodes and noticed the disclaimer at the end of each show. First, I invite the reader to see how much of it can be read in 3.3 seconds, which is exactly how long the message is displayed. Second, notice the word "producer" is used twice. However, there are no fewer than eleven "producers" mentioned. Third, what a tragedy it is for so many believers to put their faith in Edward and his ilk when all they need to do is read the last three lines (which of course is impossible unless you're a speed reader) and see the words "...are not meant or intended to be a form of...factual statement in anyway whatsoever."

Four years ago I debated James Van Praagh on a local TV show. It is sad to see bereaved people, who are most vulnerable to charlatans, continue to be deceived by those who make millions.
