An Anatomy of Skepticism
Skeptical Inquirer, Sept-Oct, 2007 by Kendrick Frazier
AN ANATOMY OF SKEPTICISM. Manfred Weidhorn. iUniverse, Lincoln, Nebraska (www.iuniverse.com), 2006. 429 pp. Softcover, $27.95. Although the author insists this lengthy work is not a systematic treatise on skepticism or a work of philosophy, it is a philosophical examination of skepticism in the context of life and culture.
Surveying the state of knowledge in some nonscientific disciplines--religion, politics and history, psychology, literature, and words and reason--and, especially, in the "highways and byways of daily life," he finds widespread uncertainty behind the mask of certitude. Behind this undermining of convictions are, he finds, the "slipperiness of assumptions" and the "virtual impossibility" of finding truth.
