Ostler, Sarah, and Anna Sun. "Fetal Sex Determination: The Predictive Value of Three Common Myths." - Brief Article

Skeptical Inquirer,  May, 2000  by Jodi Chapman,  Kendrick Frazier

Ostler, Sarah, and Anna Sun. "Fetal Sex Determination: The Predictive Value of Three Common Myths." Canadian Medical Association Journal 161(12):1525-26, December 14, 1999. The authors conducted an empirical study to determine whether three of the "old wives' tales" (the fetal heart rate test, the Chinese calendar test, and the Drano test) predicting the sex of an unborn child were scientifically accurate.

They concluded that the tales' predictions were no more accurate than simple guesses.
