It's a natural selection: Evolution Amber Ale

Skeptical Inquirer,  March-April, 2006  by Amanda Chesworth

Beer is an ancient invention, so, using the reasoning of proponents of long-forgotten Eastern mysticism and alternative medicine practices, it must therefore be inherently good for us. How can we doubt this logic? Surely we skeptics can agree that a fine ale or lager can provide an evidence-based cure for thirst ... a common and recurring ailment among our species.

Greg Shirf, founder of Wasatch Brewery in Utah, has been an activist against nonsense for years. Recently, to protest his disdain for Intelligent Design he found a new name for his award-winning amber ale: Evolution Amber Ale. The label features a Darwin Approved seal and the tagline, "created in 27 days, not 7."

"The unintended irony is that this beer actually is evolutionary," Schiff noted. "The 2002 'Unofficial' Amber Ale has been a top seller for five years. We always knew that we would need to come up with a new name in order to remain meaningful for our customers. It was just a matter of time before Utah legislators provided us with the right inspiration."

On the Wasatch Brewery Web site (www.wasatchbeers.com) visitors can learn about the products available, be introduced to the political climate in Utah, and also read a well-written argument against Intelligent Design.

Another Wasatch brew, which gained national and international spotlight, was Polygamy Porter, with the tagline "Why have just one?" Cheers!
