There are few hooks available that provide critiques of "alternative" health care, and here a longtime researcher and investigator for the Australian Skeptics organization provides a guide intended to help fill that gap. The idea is to give a brief introduction so that the reader can make informed decisions. The book tackles scores of topics, arranged alphabetically, from absent healing and actualism to macrobiotics and magnetic therapy to wheatgrass diet and Willard's Water. For each topic he gives a short history, the theory or philosophy behind the practice, its modus operandi, and finally an assessment based on scientific or rational inquiry or just comm on sense. There are also chapters on miscellaneous techniques and therapies; the placebo effect; gizmos, gadgets, pills, and potions; quackery; and "alternative" consultations. Indexed.
