Afterimage,  May, 2002

The international Jury of the 45th annual World Press Photo Contest has selected a black and white photograph, originally published by the newspaper Berlingske Tidende, by the Danish photographer Erik Refner as the 2001 World Press Photo of the year. Taken in June in a refugee camp in Pakistan, the picture shows a one-year-old boy being washed and wrapped in a cloth in preparation for burial.

The Mayor of Amsterdam presented Refner with his award, which carries a cash prize of [epsilon]10,000, on April 21.
