The English Mumming Play: An Introductory Bibliography. By Eddie Cass, Michael J. Preston and Paul Smith. London: FLS Books, 2000.37 pp. 4.50 [pounds sterling] (pbk). ISBN 0-903515-21-9
This booklet, although brief, is no mere bibliography, but a succinct critical guide through the many interlocking puzzles and debates that surround its topic. The three authors have all played a part in the Traditional Drama Research Group whose discussions in the 1970s and 1980s, centred in the universities of Leeds and Sheffield, led to the rejection of the myth/ritual interpretation that had previously dominated the field. Consequently, their crisp introductory comments to each section of their listings have the authority of long experience; anyone coming fresh to the topic, or bemused by old arguments, will find reliable guidance here.
