EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN "LUCK" AND PSI: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT: This paper considers the possibility that everyday experiences of good and bad luck might be explained in terms of psi byway of a review of empirical research that has examined the relationship between self-rated luckiness and psi performance. It is reported that findings from such research are equivocal.

The lack of consistency in these research findings is discussed in light of the variety of methods used to measure luckiness, and the variety of methods used to measure psi performance. It is suggested that future research in this area should (a) employ reliable and valid measures of luckiness and related beliefs about luck, (b) consider employing nonintentional psi tasks, (c) expand upon current models of nonintentional psi, and (d) be informed by psychological research on luck and coincidence.
