Trauma, Dissociation, and Impulse Dyscontrol in Eating Disorders. - book reviews

Adolescence,  Summer, 1999

VANDERLINDEN, Johan, & VANDEREYCKEN, Walter. Bristol, PA: Brunner/Mazel, 1997. 228pp. $28.95 (h).

In the past decade, therapists have begun to see a relationship between experiencing trauma and the development of eating disorders. This book explores this relationship and presents the latest in theory, assessment, and treatment of traumatic and dissociation experiences coupled with eating disorders. It opens with a brief synopsis of studies on trauma and dissociation specifically related to eating disorders. The authors then present cases in which many factors play a role in the development of psychological disorders later in life. Assessment of individual cases is emphasized and treatment methods are analyzed. Specific guidelines for helping a patient to get control over these disorders are included, and why family and marital issues are important to consider when working with these patients is examined. Original research findings, extensive case vignettes, detailed therapeutic guidelines, a full copy of several new questionnaires, and a complete list of references on the subject are also included. Finally, the authors discuss critical issues regarding risks, complications, and pitfalls in treatment.
