Contemporary Review, Nov, 2004
The Complete World of Greek Mythology. Richard Buxton. Thames & Hudson. [pounds sterling]24.95. 256 pages. ISBN 0-500-251215. In this attractively presented introduction, the author, who is Professor of Greek Language and Literature in the University of Bristol, sets out to give readers a 'detailed account as they were narrated within the contexts of ancient Greek culture'.
He discusses their cultural contexts, and then looks at the myths concerning the origin of the world and of life. He examines 'power, honour and sexuality' in the home life of the gods, their heroic exploits, family sagas, geographical settings (a fascinating chapter) and, lastly, how these myths have survived two thousand years of Christian civilisation to remain a vital ingredient in modern life. The text is helped by no fewer than 330 illustrations of which 139 are in colour. (P.P.F.)
