Cross Currents,  Spring, 2007  by Tom Yorty

Anywhere anyone finds the red leaf, rising
tide, the bicycle pump--the evolution
of which remains confined to the principle
of weight technology--helps the imagination;
Olmsted taking the river system through
Nicaragua back to New York where even
on the GW stuck in gridlock the bridge
pulsing like a large vein back to the heart
back to the start never the same; the old
adage declares never twice even in eight
years people we used to know the last time
this time intention has little if anything
to do with it, your eyes have to be open
or the days far from idle end on some bus trip
with strangers going to Branson, Missouri.

This news of the human race ought to be
tomorrow's headlines but the editors
don't care nor do the presses print for
people who read maps. The language
changes idioms and dialects stay the
same everything resides in the eye
patched in black opens, sees, translates.
