Forest fire

Cross Currents,  Spring, 2004

"For whoever does any of these transgressions, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from their people." (Leviticus 18:29)

To run away, to flee, escape; I hold
My trembling daughter in my arms and run
As fire, pursuing us, cuts off the road
While bursts of heat engulf us like a sun.

My daughter cries as flames, now crimson red,
Flash out and scorch more trees; we try to hide
Inside a cavern with a make-shift bed
Where she can rest from burning trees outside.

I know the truth that she does not yet know:
That I ignite these trees each time I sin,
That I endanger her each time I go
To play with matches games I cannot win.

I pray that she won't hate me, but forgive;
I pray: may she, my soul, my daughter, live.
