Inside TRL: behind the scenes in the life of an MTV VJ

Everywhere I go, people want to know what happens when the TRL cameras aren't rolling. What happens in those candid moments between me and the crew and the guests? Well, let me tell you, it's not always glamorous. Yes, I've had my starstruck moments--but I've also had my share of wacky episodes.

Spit Chat

My job is nothing like high school--I get to talk to beautiful women, for one thing. And they actually talk back, too. Take Tyra Banks. Now, when I'm around good-looking girls, I tend to salivate more than normal. For my first question, I managed to ask Tyra something sans spitball. But for No. 2, I slipped--and landed a small spitball on her lower tip. Then, in front of an audience of millions, she called me on it. Humiliating.

Dave Matthews' Boob Job

Dave Matthews came in to play an acoustic set on MTV2 a few years ago. That night I happened to be sitting in the makeup room when Dave walked in. I sat in awe as he told me about a trip he took to Mexico with his wife, He was getting a facial, and the woman thought the birthmark on his cheek was a pimple--she began to squeeze and squeeze. He would have told her to stop, he said, but he was too distracted by her very ample endowments.

A Couple of Numb Nuts

Last year I had a really bad toothache. While backstage at TRL, I rubbed ointment on my gums to numb the pain. My colleague Sway saw me with the tube and asked to borrow it. I figured he had a toothache, too, but it turned out he rubbed it all over his lips, thinking it was lip balm. I tried to stop him, but it was too late. Later, he confided that his lips were completely numb the entire time he was on-air.
