Broccoli knocks out ulcer bag

Men's Fitness,  Oct, 2002

Did George Bush's mom know about this? Sulforaphane, a chemical contained in most varieties of broccoli and broccoli sprouts, has been shown to kill the Helicobacter priori bacterium. H. priori is considered responsible for most cases of peptic ulcers and gastritis, and is linked to an enhanced risk of gastric cancer.

In lab tests, researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that sulforaphane can eliminate the bacteria even when it's hiding inside cells of the stomach lining or when it's become resistant to antibiotics.

While human trials have yet to occur, lead author led W. Fahey, Ph.D., believes that the levels tested were of a "reasonable" dietary level. "I feel quite comfortable suggesting people eat more fruits and vegetables, specifically cruciferous vegetables, specifically broccoli," he says. "It's safe, healthy and effective in protecting against cancers."

The report was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
