More high school students than ever are taking classes to study how the physical world works. What's behind the soaring popularity of physics?
Physics classes used to focus heavily on mathematics. Over the last 20 years, schools have created a variety of classes to interest more students in the subject. These new courses emphasize understanding basic physics ideas, not just formulas, says Michael Neuschatz, a researcher at the American Institute of Physics.
The subject's future looks bright: Enrollment numbers look like they'll continue to rise, he says.
