Howling success
Science World, March 28, 2005 by Patricia Janes
Grab your binoculars: Gray wolves are back in abundance in Yellowstone National Park.
Several million of the species, Canis lupus, once roamed much of North America. But by the early 1900s, the wolves had been hunted to near extinction.
Ten years ago, in an effort to rebuild the species in the Western United States, scientists imported 14 gray wolves from Canada and reintroduced them into Yellowstone. Currently, 171 wolves call the protected park home. "The future of wolves in the park now looks bright," says Douglas Smith, leader of the Yellowstone Wolf Project.
