Pandas celebrate

Science World,  March 6, 2006  by Mona Chiang

Last December marked the 25th anniversary of wild-panda conservation in China. The long effort bears good news for the endangered species, which is at risk of dying out.

Wild pandas' biggest threat is habitat loss due to construction and logging. Conservation has led to the creation of nearly 60 land reserves to safeguard pandas and their forest homes.

As a result, there are approximately 1,600 wild pandas today. "That's 50 percent more than in the 1980S," says Karen Baragona, a conservation scientist at World Wildlife Fund.

NATIONAL TREASURE:

Pandas are native to forests in the mountainous regions of Southwest China.
