Explain this! What's with the frosty building?

Science World,  March 22, 2004

Last January, firefighters battled more than the burning Masonic Hall, a historic building in Bangor, Maine. Sub-freezing temperatures of -25.56[degrees]C (-14[degrees]F) caused the spraying water to freeze, blanketing the hall in a 10-inch-thick layer of ice. The weight of the proved too much for the 136-years-old building. The landmark began to buckle. To prevent an uncontrolled collapse, officials used a wrecking ball to demolish the building.
