Howdy, neighbors

Advocate, The,  July 19, 2005  by Anne Stockwell

Welcome to the Neighborhood

* ABC * Premieres Sunday, July 10, at 9 P.M.

"Oh, Lord," mutters Jim Stewart when partners Steve and John Wright step out of their car holding their adopted baby, Eli. We're watching episode 1 of Welcome to the Neighborhood, ABC's addictive new reality show, in which seven "diverse" families compete to move into a Texas-size house on a cul-de-sac in a picture-perfect suburb of Austin. (This idea might have livened up the remake of The Stepford Wives, but, oh, well.) Judging the contest--and booting off one family of hopefuls each week--are three families of neighborhood homeowners led by Stewart, the self-styled "governor of the cul-de-sac." Faced with Wiccans, Hispanics, African-Americans, Koreans, tattoo artists, and those gays, the homeowners have some mind-expanding choices to make. But so do the contestants: Do they really want to live in such a white-bread neighborhood? It all makes for delicious TV, especially since--if you're honest--you know that in this situation you might just feel the same nasty things inside.
