Kerry's ongoing battle
Advocate, The, August 16, 2005
Led by Kerry Pacer, a courageous 17-year-old student at White County High School in Cleveland, Ga., several gay students and their allies fought for and won the right to form a gay-straight alliance at their rural school last March. But the parents and school officials who opposed them are determined to take their victory back.
A White County schools subcommittee on June 17 recommended cutting all clubs in the school system and suggested that extracurricular clubs be replaced with a system of clubs sponsored and led by local adults. "Clubs have not lived up to what they are supposed to be doing," White County superintendent Paul Shaw said previously. "Plus, we want to focus on academics this coming school year."
