While facing strong opposition in the United States, same sex marriage is rapidly gaining acceptance abroad. High courts in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Nova Scotia ruled in September that banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, bringing the total number of provinces or territories to allow it up to six. Manitoba's case was the first to go unopposed by the country's federal government. Prime Minister Paul Martin has vowed to make same-sex marriage legal across Canada; about half of the country's 31 million people support it.
Spain's Socialist government was expected to approve gay marriage rights at a cabinet meeting on October 1. The move still needs parliamentary approval.
Although Spain is almost entirely Catholic, about 70% of its 41 million residents support same-sex marriage.
