Unwholly matrimony - Congress - Brief Article

Advocate, The,  June 25, 2002

For the, second consecutive year, conservative group Alliance for Marriage has proposed amending the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as consisting "only of the union between a man and a woman." House cosponsors of the proposed amendment, introduced May 15, are representatives Ralph Hall (D-Tex.), David Phelps (D-Ill.), Chris Cannon (R-Utah), Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), Jo Ann Davis (R-Va.), and Ronnie Shows (D-Miss.).

To become law, the amendment would have to win two-thirds majorities of both houses of Congress and then be ratified by three fourths of all state legislatures, something experts say is unlikely.
