Sharp Wit - film adaptation of Margaret Edson's play Wit - Brief Article
Advocate, The, March 27, 2001
ONE OF THE BEST FILMS of 2001 is guaranteed not to get any Oscar nominations--because it's premiering on HBO March 24.
Wit, from the play by lesbian Pulitzer Prize winner Margaret Edson, stars Emma Thompson as a stem professor whose life of the mind gets thrown a curve when her body has to cope with terminal ovarian cancer. Thompson and director Mike Nichols adapted the acclaimed play, and the result is an extraordinary film experience--powerful, moving, funny, understated, and, ultimately, devastating.
While Edson is pleased with the final product, there's one change she wishes the filmmakers had made: "The performances are so circumspect, and every artistic decision feels respectful, sincere, and honorable. I only wish they would have put a chase scene in there!"
