God save the queens

Advocate, The,  Dec 22, 1998

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott lashed out at the press in November for prying into politicians' private lives after the best-selling Sun tabloid demanded to know whether Britain is being run by a "gay mafia."

Prescott launched his attack after Agriculture minister Nick Brown was forced to acknowledge that he's gay when a former lover tried to sell his story. "I think it's quite deplorable. [Newspapers] seem to be judge, jury, and executioner in this matter," Prescott told the BBC.

The Sun said the revelation that a fourth member of Prime Minister Tony Blair's cabinet' is gay had set alarm bells ringing. "Tell us the truth, Tony," the paper, owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, said in a front-page editorial.
