* Fifty-five percent of those surveyed favor opening a small portion of the Alaskan wilderness to oil exploration as a way to reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil; 35 percent oppose the idea (Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll).
* Idaho has an official fruit, the huckleberry, but has not until this year recognized the potato as its official vegetable (news report on the potato bill, which passed the state Senate unanimously and by a vote of 61-2 in the House).
* Knives are making a comeback as the weapon of choice in homicides in New York City, a situation authorities attribute to the effectiveness of gun-control efforts (Newsday report on the city's 62 homicides to date this year, with 23 of them committed with a knife or other sharp instrument).
* President George W. Bush would put up the better fight in the ring with Mike Tyson, according to 43 percent of those given a choice between Bush or Al Gore (30 percent) as the better fighter (Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll).
