So should you buy that supercharged new computer? Carefully following an example in the manual that demonstrated how to use the present-value screen to compare the cost of a loan with the return on the same amount kept in my money-market fund, I learned I should pay cash. If my savings were earning a higher rate of interest, that answer would change.

Then, using the variable-rate screen, I calculated how much time it would take to recover the damage to my nest egg and decided to hold off for a while. I hope your numbers look better than mine.
