Talk to the Camera

Home Office Computing,  Oct, 1999  by Melissa J. Perenson

SLEEK AND STYLISH. THAT'S THE WAY TO describe Epson's first two-megapixel (up to 1,984 by 1,488 resolution), USB-equipped digital camera, the metallic PhotoPC 800 ($699; Epson America, 800-463-7766, www.epson.com). The pocket-size camera is comfortable enough for single-handed picture-taking, thanks to a contoured, rubberized grip and a convenient function dial that controls camera settings.

The sharp 1.8-inch color LCD let us review our images and choose from mode options such as continuous, interval, macro, panorama, and 2x digital zoom. When things speed up, a handy Quick Shot mode lets you capture one image per second at 1,600 by 1,200 resolution and two images per second in 640 by 480 (VGA) mode.

As a bonus, a built-in microphone lets you add a 10-second or shorter voice clip to each image. This is a treat for Realtors who need to add more "color" to photos of a new home.
