* Concerned African American Law Enforcement and Fire Fighters (CALEFF, 866-235-7305, pin number 3960) was launched in February to increase the representation of African Americans in the police and fire departments. According to New York Police Department Chief of Personnel James Lawrence, "African Americans make up about 30% of New York City, and currently only about 15% of the police department is made up of African Americans." Only 2.7% of the fire department is African American and more than half are bound for retirement.
