Janet's Estranged Hubby, Rene Elizondo, Files $10 Mil. Suit Against Her

Jet,  Jan 22, 2001

Janet Jackson's estranged husband recently filed a $10 million lawsuit against the singer-actress, claiming she broke a promise to divide property acquired before their marriage in 1991.

Rene Elizondo Jr. alleges that Jackson agreed in 1987 to share the proceeds from her 1989 album, Rhythm Nation 1814, as well as other assets.

The lawsuit also claims that Jackson promised to share equally in any assets acquired after their relationship began in 1987.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks more than $10 million.

Elizondo filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court last year, revealing that he and Janet had been secretly married since 1991 (JET, June 19, 2000).

Jackson, who has sold more than 40 million recordings, announced in February 1999 that she and Rene had separated.
