Bush-o-nomics behind bars

Washington Monthly,  July-August, 2003

> It's official: The "Bush Recession" now extends to prison. The Colorado Department of Corrections recently informed resident felons that state budget woes would force it to cut prisoners' pay from $2 a day to 60 cents, while unemployed prisoners will collect just 23 cents a day. In a remark worthy of Ari Fleischer, a spokesman explained that the 23-cents-a-day stipend "keeps them from becoming indigent."
