Certain society awards - Awards & Honors Recipients - Photographic Society of America

Three of the five Certain Society Awards (Stuyvesant Peabody, PSA Appreciation Award, and the Early Achievement Award were presented at the Membership Meeting during the 2003 PSA International Conference held in Houston, Texas. The John Doscher Memorial Award and the Victor H. Scales Memorial Award were not presented this year. A brief description of each award, the name of the person selected by the Committee, and a description of their descriptions are presented below.
Stuyvesant Peabody Memorial Award
Stuyvesant's son, Patrick H. Peabody, originated this award in memory of this father who stimulated the area of pictorial photography. The awards has been continued through generous gift by Mary A. Mallas, FPSA. This award recognizes a member of PSA who has contributed significant to pictorial photography by exhibiting, judging, lecturing, writing or teaching.
Gerald H. Emmerich, Jr., FPSA, EPSA. of East Troy, Wisconsin is the recipient of the Stuyvesant Peabody Award for 2003. His teaching, his judging, his publishing, his service, his awards place him in the forefront of PSA members throughout the country. A members of PSA since 1979, Gerry, has exhibited widely. His exhibition success has earned 7 Best Shows, 58 medals, 151 Honorable Mentions and 2,286 acceptances. Gerry has been a leading judge for over 25 years. He has lectured on basic photography, composition and lighting, judging, and how to assemble a dissolve show. In addition to the PSA Journal, he has written numerous articles for In Focus, the Wisconsin Chapter Newsletter--most notably, his member profile and articles on "Who's Who in Wisconsin." Over 300 of his images are used in many publications such as Wisconsin's nature conservancy calendar. The Week, and local travel brochures. Gerry has held many offices in PSA and PSA and affiliated camera club organization including the PSA Wisconsin Chapter; Director, PSA Region 21; Director, PSA Photo Travel "Tops" Program; PSA Chapters Committee; and PSA International Conference Equipment Chairman. He has been instrumental in furthering the Milwaukee and PSA Youth Showcase.
PSA Appreciation Award
Drs. Samuel and Evelyn Ross in memory of Helen Manzer, FPSA, established this award in 1972. These former students wanted to honor her in recognition of her teaching. This award is presented in recognition of outstanding service in the advancement of photography through teaching with no financial compensation.
Jeffrey J. Tamms, FPSA, EPSA, of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin is the recipient of the PSA Appreciation Award for 2003. The services that Jeff has rendered to photography and its advancement are numerous on the local, state, national and international level. A long-time member as well as President and Program Director for the Photo Pictorialist of Milwaukee, Jell Tamms has been a mentor and guide to many beginning photographers in the Milwaukee area. As head of the Wisconsin Area Camera Club's competition committee, Jeff has initiated two areas of competition for the encouragement of novices. He has been an avid supporter of the Youth Showcase in Milwaukee through the city's high schools. He was an early and innovative leader of digital photography in Wisconsin including beginning the Heartland Digital Salon in Milwaukee. His services to photography are numerous and include establishing the web page for Wisconsin Area camera club, administering the Wisconsin Circuit, and serving as a judge for all levels of photo groups from camera club to international salon. Jeff has chaired PSA exhibitions in Color Slide, Large Prints, and various Photojournalism areas. His taped critiques are sought after by out-of-state clubs and individuals seeking photographic advice.
John Doscher Memorial Award
Barbara Doscher and Arthur P. Henricks, Jr. Hon PSA, FPSA established this award in 1981 in memory of a husband and friend. The award is presented annually to the member who has made outstanding or unique contributions to classical photography. No candidate was selected for this year's award.
Early Achievement Award
This award is offered annually to a relatively new member (three to not more than five years) who by his/her personal enthusiasm and individual initiative benefits the Society to an exceptional degree over it consistent period of time. This is the first time it has been presented since established in 2001. The award has been financed by an anonymous donor for five years.
Joanne Stolte, PPSA, of Glendora, California is the recipient of the PSA Early Achievement award for 2003. Joanne is an active and enthusiastic participant in anything photographic at the club, council and society level. Joanne joined the Glendora Camera Club and the Photographic Society of America in 1999. She has been an active participant in the the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs and is currently serving as president. She is general chairman if the S4C Salon for the second year. Joanne has been active in PSA from her first conference in Albuquerque and is serving the Color Slide Division of PSA as Chair of the "International Color Slide Competition for Individuals," as well as Second Vice Chair of the Photojournalism Division. She is actively exhibiting in Color, Nature, Photo Travel and Photojournalism and has, this year, achieved her PPSA.
