On my mind …

PSA Journal,  Oct, 2003  by Richard M. Frieders

The Houston conference is now over and all of the programs, photo tours and other activities proved to be a great time for everyone. The conference also brings new management changes to PSA. Several new members have joined the Board of Directors and as your new President, I look forward to the new ideas and experience that they will bring to the group. We have already held several meetings and discussions about some new concepts for the future. A great group of people will be serving with me and I'm looking forward to working with all of them. I'd also like to thank all of the people who have agreed to serve on PSA's many committees that make all of our various activities possible.

Al Sieg, Hon, PSA, FPSA, EPSA, our past President, has left the Society running smoothly and the entire Society owes him and all of the outgoing Board members a great deal of thanks for all the time and effort they gave over the past four years. We plan to continue with many of the programs they brought to the Society and expand on them wherever possible.

There has never been a period of time in which photography has changed so much in so short a time. PSA must keep up with the changes if we wish to attract and keep members who are interested in learning more about electronic photography. On the other hand, a large percentage of our members still enjoy traditional photography and we plan to continue to provide new activities for them as well. We can always use help in this area, so if you have any ideas for new services or ways to improve some of our current activities, please let me know. All suggestions will be considered and I will acknowledge all letters.

Like many other associations, membership decline is still our number one problem. Several plans to attract new members are in process now and we will continue to concentrate our efforts in this direction. One of my major objectives as President will be to see our membership numbers turn around and I'd like to invite all of you to join me in accepting this challenge. Talk your fellow camera club members into joining PSA and then get them involved with one or more activities so that they stay a member. Naturally, we're always open to any ideas that can help in this area also.

Thirty-two years ago, someone told me about a great photographic organization know as PSA. I don't recall exactly what was said, but it sounded interesting enough to convince me to join. Little did I ever think back then that I would eventually have the honor of being President. With the honor also comes the responsibility, and with the help of our new officers, our headquarters staff, and you as members, I plan to do my best to keep this one of the best photographic organizations in the world.
