Making Boston Schools Safer - Safe Schools program to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students - Brief Article

Progressive, The,  April, 2000

Boston

Andrea Carney (right) and Cassandra Cruikshank, seniors at the Boston Arts Academy, spoke to the press on behalf of the school's Gay/Straight Alliance at a Safe Schools kickoff event. As part of the Safe Schools program, the city and the state will provide funding to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students in Boston public high schools.

According to a Massachusetts Department of Education Youth Risk Behavior Survey from 1997, 22 percent of gay, lesbian, and bisexual students reportedly skip school because of safety concerns, compared to 4 percent of their peers.
