The Four Feathers

Interview,  Sept, 2002  by Thelma Adams

(Paramount Pictures)

Directed by Shekhar Kapur

Britain, 1898: Officer Harry Feversham (Heath Ledger) resigns his post on the eve of departure for the Sudan, earning him white feathers for cowardice from three army compatriots and his fiance (Kate Hudson). Plumes in hand, he heads to Africa and goes undercover--as an Arab laborer--to protect his mates and redeem himself. Subversive Indian-born director Kapur (Bandit Queen, 1994; Elizabeth, 1998) slyly revisits this oft-adapted, staunchly imperialist 1902 novel.
