Prince-Bythewood's directorial debut hovered under the radar at Sundance (where it was overshadowed by Girlfight, another estrogen-friendly sports film), but this tough-skinned, empathetic, and very witty romance--portraying devotion to the game and one's partner with equal grit and sensuality--deserves a starting-lineup spot. As a cocky second-generation hoop star, Omar Epps radiates a surprising sweet vulnerability, and Sanaa Lathan gives a breakout performance of rousing physical and emotional grace.
