The Weather Man

Interview,  April, 2005  by Carolyn Murnick

REVIEW: THE WEATHER MAN

(Paramount) Directed by Gore Verbinski

Fresh off the heels of his blockbuster The Pirates of the Caribbean (2003), director Gore Verbinski delivers this small, intimate tale of a Chicago TV meteorologist (Nicolas Cage) in the midst of a midlife crisis, struggling to reconcile with his estranged wife (Hope Davis), connect with his troubled kids, and care for his ailing, condescending father (Michael Caine). Although Cage channels some of his greatest underdog performances like those of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) and Adaptation (2002), his efforts here are overshadowed by the film's frequent fluctuations in style and tone, like a day that can't decide between rain or shine.
