In Bruges

Interview,  Feb, 2008  by Brendan Lemon

Review: IN BRUGES Directed by Martin McDonagh (Focus)

In Martin McDonagh's first stab at directing a feature, Bruges--the medieval jewel-box city in Belgium--provides a pristine contrast to the trademark rough-poetry rhythms of his screenplay. However, for the first half of this movie, which concerns two hit men (Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell) on the lam, the artificiality of McDonagh's dialogue, which has deservedly made him a major name as a playwright, feels all wrong. It is only when the pair's boss (Ralph Fiennes) tracks them down that a trudging buddy movie becomes a compelling action flick, whooshing through the ancient byways of Bruges.
