The Like: like, they're young, connected, and, like, really really good
Interview, Feb, 2003 by Matt Diehl
Not many bands juggle press with SATs. Or comprise the progeny of Pete Thomas, longtime drummer for Elvis Costello; producer Mitchell Froom; and A&R man Tony Berg. Or are the new L.A. buzz band, with an average age of 16.67 years. Then again, not many bands are the Like. No Lolita marketing gimmick, guitarist-vocalist Elizabeth "Z" Berg, bassist Charlotte Froom, and drummer Tennessee Thomas combine youthful energy with mature songwriting; the spangly result resembles a love child of Radiohead, the Cardigans, and PJ Harvey.
For Z, the Like's been a family affair from the beginning. "Our dads were at a party," she explains, "and Charlotte's dad was like, My daughter's band is looking for a singer-slash-guitarist!.' And my dad said, 'My daughter's a singer-slash-guitarist!'" Thomas interrupts, "At our first rehearsal Z said, 'You have nice hair--you're in my band!' After one song, our jaws dropped."
Meanwhile, the girls know what part genetics plays in their development. "My dad taught me how to play guitar," Z says. "I have someone whose taste I value living in my home." Thomas, however, isn't so sure: "My dad's always like, 'No practice on Tuesdays: You've got homework!'"
