Interview, Nov, 2000 by Guy Flatley
Directed by James Gray
Mark Wahlberg just wants to go straight in this harrowing, operatically intense drama of friendship, trust, betrayal, bloodshed, and sudden death. But the sensitive ex-con takes a serious wrong turn when he hooks up with his trigger-tempered old playmate-in-crime (Joaquin Phoenix), lands a job working for his snake of an uncle (James Caan) on the New York City subway yards, and gets too close to his own hot cousin (Charlize Theron) for jealous Joaquin's comfort. We've been here before, but Gray and his splendid cast--especially the rivetingly volatile Phoenix--make it seem like bold, darkly spectacular new ground.
