Pink: Try This
Interview, Nov, 2003 by Dimitri Ehrlich
Perhaps Malcolm McLaren was right when he came up with the notion of karaoke culture: musical statements that have already been made but that current pop stars endlessly rehash into parody. But the conviction and skill with which 24-year-old screamer Pink rips through this tour of 1980s new wave, sneering R&B, and Janis Joplin redux rockers manage to make the punk avatar seem a bit more stodgy.
The musical Zelig even offers a slightly countrified rocker, "Walk Away," that Shania Twain will wish she had recorded first. Listen, old man: It may only be karaoke, but we like it.
