Kasabian: Empire
Interview, Oct, 2006 by Matt Diehl
(RCA)
While Kasabian's eponymous 2004 debut combined Manchester dance-rock, Britpop swagger and electronica atmosphere, here the British rock band (named, naturally, after Charles Manson's getaway driver) prove even harder-rocking and psychedelic. As epically ambitious as its title, Empire proves alternately glamtastic and trippy & la early Pink Floyd, leavened by serious helpings of Krautrock urgency and the occasional Dylanesque ballad. Ultimately, Kasabian's sophomore effort proves more about sound than song; that's a small quibble when you're wielding the retro-chic noise of the future.
