Lady Sovereign: Public Warning

Interview,  Oct, 2006  by Matt Diehl

(Def Jam)

Lady Sovereign, the female rapper from the U.K. who is the latest great white hype to hit hip-hop, hates being called "Feminem." On her debut album, however, the comparison often fits. Like the real Slim Shady, she provocatively explores the price of fame on her personal life in songs like "9 to 5" and "Love Me or Hate Me." Mostly, however, this pint-size MC makes grooves that put the fun back into funk with playful yet virtuosic rhyme skills. Indeed, when she cuts loose with an unstoppable flow over the booming bass beats on tracks like "Random" and "Gatheration," it creates a sensation powerful enough to make Lil Jon spill his Crunk juice.
