Giant drag: a melodically moody match made in musical heaven

Interview,  Oct, 2005  by Milena Selkirk

When singer and guitarist Annie Hardy's mother tried to introduce her daughter to the nice boy she met at work, Hardy reacted in a manner not uncommon for independent-minded young women. "I was like, 'No fucking way!'" she recalls. Her mother's intuition, however, proved to be prescient: A few weeks later, Hardy met that very same boy, Micah Calabrese--himself a drummer and keyboardist--at a party, and their band, Giant Drag, was born. "It was cosmic," she enthuses.

Cosmic is a good way to describe Giant Drag's recently released debut, Hearts and Unicorns (Kickball Records), a lush collection of gorgeously grungy rock anthems and moody, melodic soundscapes. "My first song was a love song, but I wasn't in love with anybody," explains Hardy. "Sometimes I'll write something, and it's like a prophecy that will come true six months later." Foresight, it seems, runs in the family.

Milena Selkirk is a New York-based writer.
