Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Interview, Oct, 2005 by Stephen Mooallern
KISS KISS, BANG BANG (Warner Bros,) Directed by Shane Black
Robert Downey Jr. stars in this Raymond Chandler-esque murder mystery from Lethal Weapon (1987) scribe and first-time director Shane Black, about a petty thief (Downey Jr.) who inadvertently scores a part in a big-budget crime flick, only to be whisked away to Los Angeles and sucked into an offscreen web of intrigue involving an also-ran starlet (Michelle Monaghan), a gay private eye (Val Kilmer), and some artfully placed dead bodies. Like Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973) and Steven Soderbergh's The Limey (1999), the film winks knowingly at both Hollywood and the noirish tropes of detective fiction. But with a trio of unforgettable performances and an array of live-wire twists, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang rises above the postmodern highjinks with slick, stylish, and surprising aplomb. It's an off-the-wall winner.
