Paradise Now
Interview, Oct, 2005 by Ohad Landesman
PARADISE NOW (Warner Independent) Directed by Hany Abu-Assad
Shot under difficult and dangerous conditions in the West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad's Paradise Now tells the story of Said and Khaled, two childhood friends chosen by an unnamed organization to carry out a terrorist strike in Tel Aviv. When the plan goes unexpectedly wrong, the two men begin to question their destiny. As with his scintillating fiction-documentary hybrid Ford Transit and his surreal romance Rana's Wedding (2002), Abu-Assad takes a cynical approach that often borders on the absurd. Giving a human face to suicide bombers without attempting to sanctify or justify their act, Paradise Now is an uncompromising step forward for a burgeoning national cinema still struggling for its existence.
