Interview,  July, 2002  by Thelma Adams

(Sony Pictures Classics)

Directed by John Sayles

Novelistic and as sprawling as a Florida subdivision, Sayles' drama tackles the push-me-pull-you relationship between developers and locals in a southeastern backwater. Two strong women (and their muscular portrayals) anchor the story: Desiree (Angela Bassett), who returns home after many years and embraces the fight against change; and Marly (Edie Falco), who remained behind and weighs the potential for escape in the developers' bounty. The story and the women deserve a sequel: We care; we want more.
