Interview,  July, 2002

MO' MAYER

Dear Interview,

I was so excited to discover you had an interview with John Mayer in your April [2002] issue, and by Elton John, no less! I have been following Mayer and listening to his music for a couple of years now, and it is amazing to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves. He is an incredible singer, songwriter and musician, and if people don't know of him yet, they will soon. Look out world--John Mayer is coming . . . and fast!

FALLIN' FOR FALLON

Dear Interview, When I make my weekly trips to local chain bookstores, I scout all the magazines for anything on Jimmy Fallon. I am one huge fan of the funnyman. And when I search around the magazines, I always check out Interview, hoping I'll find him there. Well, I was sure glad to see him on the cover of your May 2002 issue. Man, he was hot in those pictures! I was also glad to see him interviewed by the awesome Mick Jagger, who appeared with Jimmy in their now classic skit on Saturday Night Live back in December 2001. It was great how Jimmy and Mick talked about Andy Warhol and British comedies. Having these two guys, whose backgrounds and personae differ so much, speak to each other was a fabulous idea. Whoever decided to hook them up is a genius!

Dear Interview, Ever see that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry gets tricked into wearing that ugly pirate shirt by Kramer's soft-spoken girlfriend? That's what Jimmy sporting an Imitation of Christ shirt in the May issue reminded me of. I know he is a comedian, but that "disturbing" shirt just wasn't funny. I think the look on his face tells readers that he must also have felt unfavorably about wearing this hideous garment. Now I know what you are thinking: rabid and jealous "never-gonna-get-'im" type fan taking a stab at innocent designer/model/actress girlfriend. But is that really so wrong? I say the next time Jimmy is in your magazine, he promotes my new line labeled The Emperor's New Robe.

IT CAN'T BE THAT BAA-AAA-AAD

Dear Interview,

Thank you for the interview with Sheryl Crow by India.Arie [May 2002]. I adore Ms. Crow and think that she is the greatest female singer-songwriter to make it out of the '90s. What she said towards the end of the conversation about Stevie Wonder was, for lack of a better word, wonderful and I can't see how anyone could take that the wrong way. My only wish for the interview would be that I would have been able to hear her sing over the phone to India.Arie. And thank you, Interview, for putting Jimmy Fallon on the cover! Could he be any cuter? Well done. Again.

Dear Interview, Since I'd always pegged "My Favorite Mistake" as a tear-wringer, I found Sheryl Crow's own view of the song intriguing: "Every time I get to sing it," she says, "I'm happy." Well if it makes her happy, it can't be that sad, can it?

OUT OF THE HAZE

Dear Interview,

I just wanted to say how great it was to see Darren Hayes in your magazine [May 2002]. It was so refreshing to read about his dreams and memories of when he was a child; but the section of the interview that got me the most was where he discussed September 11. It is too often that we see artists get so caught up in themselves that they do not have time to stop and realize that there are people who need a little love. . . Darren Hayes is a truly heartfelt guy and I really believe that stardom hasn't gone to his head.

CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD

Dear Interview,

I was very pleased to finally see an article on my favorite singer of all time, Kylie Minogue, in your magazine [May 2002]. Kylie is an international goddess--one, however, who deserves to be on the cover. Surely it was a mistake or something that she wasn't. She kicks major ass. I hope to see the international queen of pop music on a future cover of Interview.

NOEL RODRIGUEZ Via the Internet

Dear Interview, After reading the interview with Kylie Minogue it's not hard to see why she's been so popular abroad for so long, and why she's recently become such a sensation here in the States--in addition to a willingness to "work her nuts off," being great-looking and having plenty of smarts (professional and otherwise), she's consistently shown herself to be more than ready to poke a little fun in her own direction and to have a laugh at her own expense. As some others in her field would be wise to learn, a little self-mockery can go a long, long way in the stardom game.
