Getting older and older

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education),  Jan, 2008  by Gerald F. Kreyche

On a positive note, see to it that you always have something to look forward to, be it a movie, card game, drive in the woods, etc. That's about it, folks. Don't get irritated that your life is lived and run between doctor appointments. There is the optometrist or ophthalmologist, the dentist, the chiropractor, etc. Given your senior status, accept the fact that you're never out of the woods. Hence, do not have expectations that when one ailment is taken care of, you are all set for a while. That is not the way it is since you are pushing the envelope each day you get older. Just be glad you still are around--and choose as your motto, Carpe diem or Seize the day! The truth is that every day is a bonus now. Old age? Love it or leave it!

Gerald F. Kreyche, American Thought Editor of USA Today, is professor emeritus of philosophy, DePaul University, Chicago.
